same sex marriage?

I believe that Congress is currently debating an amendment banning same sex marriage. It will never pass, but then again it wasn't meant to. Rather, the stratagem preferred by the Republican Party--scratch that, all politicians--is to promote meaningless and harmful regulations such as these to fire up their constituents; the better to raise awareness of themselves and thus maintain their jobs. The desire on a senator's part to be reelected is the source of many an odious act, up to and including this particular piece of legislation.
Banning same-sex marriage is not based on anything. There is no evidence showing it hurts anyone. Most objections are religious in origin, which means they should be discounted immediately (same-sex marriage being a private issue within each particular denomination, and civil unions being a public issue).
There are a subset of words in the English language that have been so strained by overuse that they can be proclaimed effectively dead. Examples: "morals", and "values". This brings me to the One Foolproof Political Rule:
Anyone who uses the terms "morals" and "family values" should be ignored.
I don't encounter as much of this stupidity as I used to being that I now attend a (fairly) liberal college, but in high school anti-homosexual slurs were a daily occurrence. Of course, most of these people now work at Spacesaver making boxes, so do you think there's a correlation there? The most racist and homophobic people are invariably the dumbest. Also: anybody who expresses "pride" in something they have no control over (what race they are, their sexual orientation, what nation they come from) is an idiot. Proud to be an American? How? You were born here; you had nothing to do with it. You can be glad to be an American, but proud makes no sense.
I do not believe religion causes intolerance and stupidity; rather, it was already there, searching for a power source, searching for something to give it credence and bring it out of the dark places in the mind. Religion does this, by virtue of some admittedly unambiguous lines damning homosexuals in Leviticus. However, according to the Bible you're supposed to murder your daughter if she gets raped, so it's fair to ignore that worthless book entirely. If you call yourself religious, read the Bible. It's full of some of the craziest shit you will ever read in your life. They might as well have founded a church upon the scribblings produced by the crazy man on the corner.
